Six British holidaymakers have been arrested for playing bingo in Turkey.

They were discovered on Friday night after police raided a bar in Altinkum, a popular tourist destination.

The men and women were detained for several hours before each being fined £55.
Bingo is seen as a form of unregulated gambling in Turkey and is against the law.

Nine other Britons were released without charge.

The operation followed complaints that the bar was allowing gambling.

The bar is likely to be forced to stay closed for a number of days as punishment for the owners.

However, the arrests have angered patrons as the bingo was part of a charity night to raise money towards the medical expenses of a British woman recovering from cancer.
The event at the Pyramid Bar had been arranged by friends of Ruby Myerscough, 60, who moved to the resort from Burnley.

She was diagnosed with cancer several weeks ago, had an operation in Turkey and is now facing the prospect of chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Pauline Ellington, who has lived in Altinkum for three years, said: ‘I hope I don’t get a criminal record for playing bingo. We have been hauled out of there as if we
are common criminals.

‘It is disgusting as the night was for a good cause.’

This is the second such raid in Altinkum in the past 15 months.

Seven British tourists were fined for playing a game in September last year.
